ABSTRACT

CORRELATION BETWEEN FAMILY’S SOCIAL SUPPORT WITH DEPRESSION FOR ELDERLY AT CEWENG HAMLET CEWENG VILLAGE
DIWEK SUB-DISTRICT JOMBANG DISTRICT IN 2011

The increasing numbers of elderly people in Indonesia will also increasing the health problems facing by the elderly, especially psychological problems. The greatest emotional problem that was faced by the elderly is depression. It is a disorder characterized by feelings of melancholy, sad, hopeless, heavy burden and cognitive decline. Likewise, the elderly aged 60-74 years at Ceweng Hamlet Ceweng Village Diwek Sub-district Jombang district experienced a lot of health problems which is depression. Lack of family support can be a cause of depression. On the other hand, family’s social support is one form of family therapy which is part of depression management for the elderly. Family’s social support can be either informational support, instrumental support, appraisal support, or emotional support.
This study aims to determine the correlation between family’s social support to depression among the elderly in the Ceweng Hamlet Ceweng village Diwek sub-district Jombang district. The study was designed uses a cross-sectional method. Samples would be taken from the entire population of 56 respondents. The data would be collected by questionnaire to obtain data about family’s social support and depression in the elderly whose results would be analyzed by spearman rank correlation test with help of SPSS 14.
The results showed that nearly half of the elderly have less family social support when dealing with depression, they are as many as 13 people (23.2%), whereas a small elderly get social support from families in management of depression are as many as 4 people (7.1%). Where the correlation is 0.699 and the value of significant value or probability value (0.000) is much lower with a significant standard (0.05), which means that (H1 accepted) in other words that there is a relationship between family social supports with depression in the elderly is significant.
This study is expected families to always give support to their family members by implementing family duties and roles as care givers for elderly at home. Meanwhile, governments need to develop some improvements in efforts and services for supporting the elderly mental condition.
